If you guessed amethyst, you are correct. The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron which happened to contain the twelve different gemstones. There are definitely numerous legends and myths about birthstone healing powers and their therapeutic influence. According to many of these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. However, for the the full effect, individuals needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly. 

Fun fact (being Polish and all… I was quite surprised): The custom of actually wearing birthstones first gained popularity in Poland in the fifteenth century.
